Europa Clipper's magnetometer instrument will have three fluxgate sensors, one of which is shown in this image. During 50 or so flybys of Europa, the sensors will measure the strength and orientation of magnetic fields around the Jovian moon, to confirm the presence of Europa’s ocean, measure the ocean's depth and salinity, and measure the moon's ice shell thickness. The fluxgate sensors will be mounted along the spacecraft's 28-foot (8.5-meter) magnetometer boom.
